What is Poverty Portal?
Poverty Portal provides a space for professional learning and knowledge-sharing among development practitioners encouraging informed decision-making on poverty reduction efforts. Users can access and post news, events, best practices and publications that are searchable online and receive e-mail newsletters of their interest. 

Why should I become a member?
Membership is free and open to all interested individuals based on a partnership of institutional or personal engagement.  While you do not need to be a member to access information on Poverty Portal, being a member has many advantages. As a member you can:

• Upload and share poverty related news, events, publications etc

• Receive new updates

• Create a profile

• Network with Poverty Portal members and contact them online

• Post comments for Portal content

What is My Profile?

My profile is a collaborative tool which provides members to perform their portal activities. It is important to keep your profile up to date since other members of the portal can see who you are. Member can see other members and contact them online using the wall messaging tool. Also members can upload resources to the portal. Once you upload a resource their will be a editorial process before publish.   

How to Edit Member Profile?

Your member profile helps others know who you are and enables them to contact you based on portal activities or shared interests. You may edit your profile information at any time. Simply re-enter your information, then click "Save" at the bottom of the page.

How can I upload content?

You can share your news, events and publications with a broader audience by posting it on Poverty Portal. You need to be a registered member to do this. To contribute content, go to your profile click on the "Add Resource" link in your profile to add documents or any related electronic publications. You also can use "Add News" or "Add Event" links in your profile to share your organizational and poverty related news and events in the portal. 

A guide to "Add Resources"

• Portal’s Resource Library includes a collection of electronic documents; a Microsoft Word document, a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, a Microsoft PowerPoint slideshow, or an Adobe Acrobat document. Each resource uploaded with metadata of the resource proving quick summary and bibliographic information. A member can upload metadata of the resource with or with out the soft copy of the resource.    

• Resources can be in English, Sinhala and/or Tamil.

• A logged in member can add content in different areas of the Portal: News, Library Resources, Blogs, Picture Essays under your Personal Profile. Content uploaded to the Portal is by default not published. The content will be visible to other members or the public once it goes through a review process by the Core Group members.

• If you are comfortable with Sinhala or Tamil Unicode typing, please fill in the relevant text areas during document submission. How ever, once you upload the resource to the portal,Portal admin team assist you to translate in to other languages at the editorial review process before make it public access  

To add resources into the Resource Library:

1. Once you are logged in to the homepage, navigate to the personal profile and click on the Add Resources link. You will be directed to a web form where you can input the meta data of the resource, after which you can attach your document.

2. Click on the Title field and enter the title. This is required (Do not exceed 60 characters including spaces). Please fill in title text boxes provided for other languages If you are able to translate. 

3. There are mandatory entries which are relevant to acknowledge the authority of the resource. Please fill these areas accurately (such as Title, Author, and Publisher).

4. Keywords provide users to efficiently search the resource library according to their interest areas. Selecting accurate keywords contrast the content of your resource at the keyword section ensure that the content will be quickly found during a search. You can press CTRL and keep on clicking to select several keywords for the particular resource upload.

5. Click on the Description field and type a description. A description is a one-paragraph text abstract. It accurately and concisely describes your resource though inclusion of key words. This is required (Do not exceed 200 characters including spaces).

6. Click the Browse button, and browse on your computer to locate the file you wish to upload. Click and highlight the file that you want to upload, and click open.

A file can be a:
•    Microsoft Word Document (.doc)
•    Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet (.xls)
•    Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation (.ppt)
•    Microsoft Access Database (.mdb)
•    Adobe Acrobat Document (.pdf)
•    Other binary files (various file extensions)

7. Available at section directs users to find the available place of the physical resource such as . Libraries, Bookstores or other physical archives. 

8. Selecting the geographical relevance of your resource helps users to efficiently filter their search through the portal focused on geographical interest.

9. Click the Save button. Your file will be uploaded to the portal and saved. If you do not click save, your file will not be created and saved.

Note: that large files may take a longer time to upload. Be patient. When your file has successfully uploaded you will see a message: “Thank you, your document/resource uploaded successfully. If you need to upload more documents go back to Add Resource”.  (We encourage you to be aware of the size of the file before upload since it will result in time-outs due to the speed of the internet connection you have).

I forgot my password
To recover your Portal password, please begin with these steps:

   1. Visit the Portal home page
   2. Click the link “Forgot your password”
   3. Enter your email address
   3. Click on the “Reset Your Password” button.

You will receive the password in to the email address provided. 

Changing your portal password

Here's how to change your password:

   1. Sign in to portal
   2. Click “My Profile” button at the right top of the home page, and open your profile.
   3. Click “Edit” button.
   4. In the profile edit, enter your password (twice) and Click on the save button.
  
Make sure you create a unique password to help keep someone from breaking in to your account.

If your password isn't working, you'll need to go through our password recovery process. Please contact (see “Contact Us page”) or send an email to Portal Team (admin@povertyportal.lk) for help with password recovery.
 

How to upload “Maps and Stats”

• Portal’s Maps and Stats library includes a collection of electronic graphic design files that support JPG, GIF, TIFF or PNG file extensions. Each of Maps and Stats graphic files can be uploaded with Meta information of the resource proving quick summary and source information. A member can upload Maps and Stats graphic file with the soft copy of the source document.

• Graphic design file can be in JPG, GIF, TIFF or PNG with the maximum resolution of 380X220 pixels. You can use Microsoft paint to edit design file.

• A logged in member can add Maps and Stats through their Personal Profile. Content uploaded to the Portal is by default not published. The content will be visible to other members or the public once it goes through a review process by the Core Group members.

• To add Maps and Stats:
