During the British rule, unskilled labourers were brought to Sri Lanka to work on tea and rubber plantation sectors. This book illustrates how the workers survived their experiences as anonymous units in an industrial system and preserved their cultural identity. Through research into the experiences of Tamil plantation workers, the author discusses the questions of whether the caste system among the Estate Tamils has been reconstituted or whether overtime there was a breakdown of caste. Concerned with the manner in which descendants of Indian Tamils in Sri Lanka have adapted to the changing conditions on the plantations as well as society in general, this book deals with caste identity and cultural continuity.
