Despite moving towards peace the human rights and even basic needs of women IDP’s often remain unmet. This research places the problems of displacement and gender in the context of Sri Lanka’s civil war and its humanitarian consequences. Concerns of displaced and conflict affected women are examined in the context of large-scale human displacement and the resulting socio-cultural and community dislocations that have occurred. Informed by lessons learnt throughout the world as societies emerge from protracted conflict and continue into the peacebuilding phase; this study attempts to bring forth the voices of marginalised women IDPs who are often left out of these conversations. This research seeks firstly to document concerns and needs of women IDPs as they contemplate resettlement. A secondary objective is also to use this research in tailoring Human Rights Education to specifically meet the identified needs of IDPs as well as to incorporate their experiences into existing programs. This book is an attempt to include, clarify and create respect for the voices and therefore the needs of women throughout the North and East who are directly affected by decisions made when discussing peacebuilding and development in Sri Lanka.
