The armed conflict in the North and the East of Sri Lanka has directly contributed to the increase in the poverty levels among the fishing communities in the Trincomalee District. There is also a disparity in levels of poverty among fishing communities belonging to different ethnic groups. It highlights the vulnerability of fishing communities from different ethnic groups which has changed considerably over time in particular with major political changes, including ceasefire agreement. This study shows a high relevance in the discourse of poverty and conflict. The concept of food security/insecurity plays a dominant role in the study and is one of the key problems in a situation conflict. The study comprises of qualitative and quantitative data gathered by field research. Kuchchaveli, Samudragama and Division 10 were selected as locations considered for this study as they fulfil several key criteria for the study such as fisheries as the main livelihood activity of the village, homogeneity of the ethnicity and conflict affectedness of the community.
