The issue looks at Southasian Diasporas around the world and examines their social and political engagements. In particular, we are interested in assessing the relationships members of these communities seek to cultivate with one another, and with their original and current homes. Mainstream representations of the Southasian diaspora often draws upon themes of the ‘model minority, and the immigrant success story. This publication takes an expansive approach to the Southasian diaspora, and goes beyond common perceptions about Southasians abroad. Stories in this edition explore the negotiations of race, ethnicity and political mobilization among Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities abroad; the non-resident Indian identity; the emergence of diasporas of Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet; and cross-pollination between cultures. The book goes beyond the common perceptions of Southasians abroad to look at other equally compelling themes. Numbering an estimated 40 million, the Southasian diaspora reflects complex histories of labour mobility, colonial intervention and decolonization, and social and economic dislocations.
