This set of documents titled ‘Lessons Learned During 12 Years of Wetland Work in Sri Lanka’ follow the projects on wetland work that have been carried out by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) supported by the Government of Netherlands. This particular section studies ‘strategic zoning’. Zoning land areas for multiple uses that are not harmful to each other is an essential foundation for environmental management. This study focuses on dividing up the areas within the Muthurajawela Marsh and the Negombo Lagoon into different zones according to their geographical features, for the purpose of management. This is carried out for the prevention of the loss of ecosystem integrity, to maintain multiple functions such as fishery, tourism, biodiversity and similar areas and to contribute to sustainable development.
