This set of documents titled ‘Lessons Learned During 12 Years of Wetland Work in Sri Lanka’ follow the projects on wetland work that have been carried out by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) supported by the Government of Netherlands. This particular section studies the disposal of solid waste and biogas. Solid and liquid waste disposal is a major concern in the Muthurajawela Marsh and the Negombo Lagoon. Six projects came under the issue of waste disposal: Household-based awareness, recycling, composting and home gardening; management of waste oil; a biogas plant with pig manure; a fish silage machine for converting fish waste to low cost animal feed; plastic waste recycling; community initiatives on solid waste and water pollution management.
