‘Meeting the challenge of poverty in urban areas’ highlights how well-governed and managed cities and towns can play a lead role in reducing poverty. In order to achieve International Development Targets, countries need to focus on development strategies which recognize the important role played by cities and towns to strengthen poor people’s capacity to improve people’s socio-economic and political conditions. This report further highlights specific issues of urban poverty and the means by which it can be reduced.
