This publication sheds light on the issue of the Farmers’ right to gain access to plant genetic resources in Sri Lanka from a legal standpoint. It explores the laws and policies already in place, it examines the prevailing perspectives on the protection of farmers’ rights and finally looks into the issues faced by Sri Lanka in relation to plant genetic resources and the rights of farmers. It is hoped that this report will be a useful resource to community based farmers’ and other rural organisations, environmental activists, university students and policy makers. It aims to increase respect for farmers’ rights including in the area of plant genetic resources while raising awareness of the importance of farmers’ participation in decision making processes that affect their lives, livelihoods and communities.
