Global economic activities have expanded as a result of international trade and the rapid development of information and communication technology (ICT) and the labour market has assumed greater importance as a dynamic factor of production. Therefore, this study aims to bridge the research gap that prevails in Sri Lanka’s labour market, focusing mainly the domestic labour market in the food crop sector. The study has been conducted in four districts covering paddy, vegetables, kurakkan and maize cultivated in irrigated and rain fed areas. The study highlights the recent trends with special reference to labour demand, supply, productivity, mobility as well as emerging issues that need to be addressed by policy makers vigilantly. Furthermore, policy recommendations on micro and macro level perspectives have been put forward.
