This documentation is of a discussion held in November 2011 at the Centre for Poverty Analysis (CEPA). The purpose of the author’s presentation is to give a global perspective on poverty asoften, poverty is thought of in our national contexts. Global inequalities are very significant. There is a tendency to overlook global inequalities. The author also suggests that the South Asian economic performance has been less impressive and that today, most of the poor people in the world are to be found in South Asia. Besides different rates of growth in different parts of the world, improvements in human welfare have also been unequal. This is partly because of different demographic transitions with developed economies experiencing much slower population growth.
