This volume is a collection of essays that have been produced as a result of a three year investment in data analysis of an island-wide National Youth Survey in Sri Lanka, covering nearly 3000 households, including the North and the East. The quantitative data is enhanced by the qualitative case studies that encompassed specific segments of youth. The immediate aim of the National Youth Survey, conducted in 1999/2000 is to collect up-to-date and reliable information about opinions, values, perceptions, concerns, grievances and aspirations of the young generation in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, it attempts to identify and have a better understanding of the major problems faced by young people in the 21st century, and obtain insights into their own ideas for solutions. This volume undoubtedly contributes to the improvement of policy and development activities in youth.
