The link between migration and development has for a long time been imperfectly understood by analysts and policy-makers, but the ground is now beginning to shift. In recent times migrant-sending countries have begun to recognize the importance of remittances for national economies and the role migrants can play as lobbyists abroad. The papers in this volume take on a fresh look at the ambiguous ,Migration-Development Nexus, with the view to explore the potential of migration for development at the local, national and international levels. Cases from countries such as Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia have been drawn from, allowing for comparisons between diverse development contexts to take place. It points out the way in which migration policy and development policy may be made to work with each other. The study has already begun to have influence among policy-makers. The issue is being taken up with renewed vigour by development agencies and organizations such as the World Bank and the OECD.
