This paper examines the main reasons that have been advanced in favour of co-operatives as a mechanism for alleviating poverty. It defines a co-operative and undertakes a brief analysis of co-operatives in Malaysia and some other countries. The problems of co-operatives are outlined and empirical evidence is reviewed, especially in respect of co-operative farming and marketing co-operatives.
