This booklet presents a summary of the Wetland Conservation Project (1991 – 1995) that has been carried out by the Central Environmental Authority, with the support of the Netherlands Government. This booklet discusses the phases and objectives of the project and the organisations that are committed to manage and conserve wetlands. This booklet presents many surveys and data on Sri Lanka’s wetlands and presents a report on the initial implementation of the wetland conservation project. The role of the community and the need for institutional development are discussed in great detail. Various strategies that will serve as guidelines for policy development are also included in this booklet. Old policies were reviewed and analysed during the course of a workshop and the outcome of that workshop are presented in this booklet. The cost of conserving wetlands has been taken into consideration and therefore the principles behind it and methods of recovering the cost have been looked into. Lack of public awareness is a major concern surrounding wetland conservation. Therefore there is a section on the aims and methods of public awareness as well as methods through which to reach the public. This booklet effectively presents the results of the wetland conservation project.
