Since January 1999, Marga Institute had undertaken a project entitled ‘A history of Ethnic Conflict in Sri Lanka: recollection, reinterpretation & reconciliation’. The outcomes of the project that were completed are being published in a series of monographs. This is the monograph no 24. This essay reviews the distinctive historical and cultural roots of Batticaloas Tamil speaking communities, explores their reciprocal ethnic stereotypes and intertwined ways of living, and surveys the impact of two decades of ethnic war on the cultural and social fabric of the eastern region today.
