The objectives of this study include developing a profile of migrant mothers and their families, establishing the effects on the children and husbands of women who migrate abroad to work as housemaids, and examining the extent to which the effects are problematic. The study was conducted using a random sample of 1200 households of mothers who had migrated overseas for employment and had been absent from their families for over six months at the time of study in the two districts with the highest incidences of female migration - Colombo and Kurunegala.

මෙම අධ්‍යයනයේ අරමුණු අතර සංක්‍රමණය වන මවුවරුන් සහ ඔවුන්ගේ පවුල් පිළිබඳ පැතිකඩක් ගොඩනැගීම, ගෘහසේවිකාවන් ලෙස පිටරට සංක්‍රමණය  වන කාන්තාවන්ගේ ස්වාමිපුරුෂයන් හා දරුවන්ට ඉන් ඇති වන බලපෑම තක්සේරු කිරීම ‍හා මෙම බලපෑම් කෙතරම් දුරට ගැටලු සහගත වන්නේ ද යන්න පරීක්ෂා කිරීම ද වේ.  අධ්‍යයනය වෙනුවෙන් රැකියාව සඳහා මාස 6කට වැඩි කලක් පිටරට සංක්‍රමණය කරන ලද මවුවරුන් 1200ක අහඹු නියැදියක් යොදාගත් අතර  එය කාන්තා සංක්‍රමණය ඉහළ අගයක් ගන්නා කොළඹ හා කුරුණෑගල දිස්ත්‍රක්ක දෙකෙන් තෝරා ගැනිණි.
