The general objective of the study conducted by the National commission of Macroeconomics and Health is to describe the occurrence of common disease among the working population in seven units in the districts of Colombo and the associated productivity losses and remedial measures. The study demonstrates that there is an urgent need for intervening in the development of productivity in the Sri Lankan industry and is aimed at assessing the work hours lost due to absence attributes to ill health and the productivity loss resulting from such absence. It attempts to study the occurrence of common illness among the employee population, their causation, nature of the health care obtained and the possible remedial measures that could be adopted to reduce the occurrence of such diseases. The three key areas for developing the work force are education and training, skill development and improvement and maintenance of the health status of the work force. The study uses spells of sickness absence from work as an indicator of morbidity covering the common health problems among the working population.
