This thesis is based on official micro-level poverty studies for agricultural and rural development in the smallholder sector in Sri Lanka. The scope of the study covers a vast area of rural development and interrelationships between the smallholder sector and rural development in Sri Lanka. It attempts to develop appropriate methodologies for measuring diversity among the poor and the use of a multi-faceted poverty targeting framework using Remenyis Poverty Pyramid model, to test the extent to which the Poverty Pyramid can be applied to analyse poverty targeting different sectors of the poor in poverty alleviation programmes. 200 farm households from 4 villages in the Ratnapura and Anuradhapura districts were chosen as the sample for the study.
