There is an estimated 800,000 Sri Lankans who are internally displaced and many of them face legal problems related to their documentation such as the birth certificates, identity cards, educational certificates, etc. This booklet provides general guidelines on obtaining these necessary documents and recourse to their legitimate rights and privileges. Some of the objectives of this publication are to provide wider opportunities for the displaced to lead a respectable life as citizens of Sri Lanka, to create awareness of their legal rights, to guide them in obtaining individual rights, etc. General principles, principles relating to protection during displacement, principles relating to humanitarian assistance, and those relating to return, resettlement and reintegration are included. A brief outline of the available legal aid and information on obtaining a birth certificate, a national identity card, a copy of a police complaint, registering a death, etc., are also included.
