This presents the results of a poverty consultation series, carried out in rural Sri Lanka from July to September 2000. The study has been carried out in the Moneragala, Hambantota, Badulla and Trincomalee districts to represent a range of socio-cultural, political and economic differences in Sri Lanka. This was done on behalf of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) with the aim of helping it get a deeper and wider understanding of poverty in Sri Lanka, based on the perceptions of the poor, which in turn would help understand the development needs and priorities as perceived by the poor. The consultations were done in the form of participatory poverty assessments with members of the poor community. The five major poverty challenges identified by the poor are developing infrastructure, redressing regional disparities, ending the civil conflict, creating income and employment opportunities and, improving education and skills training. Some key issues to be monitored are also included in the study.
