It is believed that there is no gender based violence in Sri Lanka because there are no extreme forms of violence such as female genital mutilation, sati or widow burning, social segregation of widows, purdah, dowry related deaths, female infanticide and foeticide, and foot binding. However gender based violence has always been widespread but it has been difficult to identify its prevalence due to lack of systematic reporting on, and recording of, such incidents. This publication focuses on most common forms of violence against women, the laws against this violence, international obligations and also shares some case studies.
