This publication presents results and analyses of the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) conducted in the six districts of the Northern and Eastern provinces in the year 2001. The districts of Jaffna, Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara are covered in the Survey. The major objective of this study is to provide up-to-date and accurate data on fertility, mortality, family planning, child nutrition and health status of children in the North and East. Information is collected from a representative sample of households selected from each district and from ever-married women in the reproductive age group identified from the sample households. The survey covers the areas of nuptial and fertility, fertility preference and desire for more children, the levels and patterns of infant and child mortality and immunization coverage of children.

2001 වසරේ දී උතුරු සහ නැගෙනහිර පළාත්වල දිස්ත්රික්ක හයක පවත්වන ලද ප්රජාවිද්යාත්මක සහ සෞඛ්ය සමීක්ෂණයේ විශ්ලේෂණයක් සහ ප්රතිඵල මෙම ප්රකාශයෙන් එලිදක්වයි. සමීක්ෂණය මගින් යාපනය, වව්නියාව, මන්නාරම, ත්රිකුණාමලය, මඩකලපුව සහ අම්පාර යන දිස්ත්රික්ක ආවරණය කෙරේ. මෙම සමීක්ෂණයේ ප්රධාන අරමුණ වන්නේ උතුර සහ නැගෙනහිර සඵල්යතාවය, මර්ත්යතාවය, පවුල් සැලසුම්, දරුවන්ගේ පෝෂණය සහ සෞඛ්ය තත්වය පිළිබඳව යාවත්කාලීන නිවැරදි දත්ත සැපයීමයි. දිස්ත්රික්කය නියෝජනය වන ආකාරයෙන් තොරාගත් කුටුම්භ නියැදියකින් සහ එක් එක් දිස්ත්රික්කයේ නියැදි ගෘහ කුටුම්භවල හඳුනාගත් සාඵල්යතා වයස් කාණ්ඩයේ කවදා හෝ විවාහ වී ඇති කාන්තාවන්ගෙන් තොරතුරු රැස් කෙරේ. විවාහකබව සහ සාඵල්යතාව, දරුවන්ට දක්වන රුචිකත්වය සහ වැඩි දරුවන් සංඛ්යාවට කැමැත්ත, ළදරු, ළමා මර්ත්යතා මට්ටම්, ඒවායේ රටාවන් සහ ළමයින් සඳහා ප්රතිශක්තිකරණ එන්නත් ලබා දීමේ හැකියාව යන ක්ෂේත්රයන් සමීක්ෂණය මගින් ආවරණය කෙරේ.
