This paper concerns mainly the problems of supply and confines itself to a few general observations regarding mismatches that can arise from investment decisions and policies. The analysis relies on the data available in the census and other socio-economic surveys conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics & statistics of Central Bank. This briefly surveys the recent trends in the occupational structure and sectoral composition of the workforce. It identifies the main characteristics of the newly employed workforce. The paper examines in detail the educational profile of the workforce particularly the new entrants to the workforce in the age group 10 to 29 years and compares it with the pattern of school leaving. Finally it also tries to identify some of the more disadvantaged groups of job seekers in the general imbalance that exists between the growth of employment and the growth of the workforce.
