There is growing emphasis in the development sector, and by policy-makers, on the importance of assessing the impacts of policies, programs and projects on poverty. It has therefore become increasingly important to reflect on the rigorousness and policy relevance of the methodologies and conceptual frameworks used by researchers and evaluators in such assessments. This volume is a compilation of selected papers from the 5th Annual Symposium on Poverty Research in Sri Lanka, held in October 2004, looking at the lessons leaned as well as the experiences gained by practitioners and researchers working on poverty related issues in Sri Lanka. The papers and discussions provide some new conceptual and methodological approaches, backed by practical experiences, for the analysis of poverty impacts. வறுமை மீதான கொள்கைகள், நிகழ்ச்சித்திட்டங்கள் மற்றும் செய்திட்டங்களது தாக்கங்களை மதிப்பிடுவதன் முக்கியத்துவத்தில் அபிவிருத்தித்துறை மற்றும் கொள்ளை உருவாக்குவோர் வழங்கும் அழுத்தம் வளர்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கின்றது. எனவே இவ்வாறான மதிப்பீடுகளின்போது ஆய்வாளர்கள் மற்றும் மதிப்பீட்டாளர்களால் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகின்ற செயன்முறைகள் இன்னும் திட்டவமைப்புக்களின் கடினத்தன்மை மற்றும் கொள்கை பொருத்தப்பாடு என்பற்றினை சிந்தனை செய்வதானது மிகவும் முக்கியத்துவமானதாக மாறிவருகின்றது. இப்பகுதி இலங்கையில் வறுமை தொடர்பான விடயங்களுடன் செயற்படுகின்ற செயன்முறையாளர்கள் மற்றும் ஆய்வாளர்கள் கற்ற பாடங்கள் மற்றும் பெற்றுக்காண்ட அனுபவங்களை கவனத்திற்கொண்டு 2004 ஒக்டோபர் மாதம் நடைபெற்ற இலங்கையில் வறுமை ஆய்வு மீதான 5வது வருடாந்த ஒன்று கூடலில் இருந்து பெற்றுக்கொண்ட கட்டுரைகளின் ஒரு தொகுப்பாகும். இக்கட்டுரைகளும் கலந்துரையாடல்களும் வறுமைத்தாக்கங்களின் ஆய்விற்காக அனுபவங்கள் ரீதியான புதிய எண்ணக்கருக்களையும் செயன்முறைகளையும் வழங்குகின்றன.
