Ownership and control of land and property are key indicators of an individual’s economic and social status. Customary practices and beliefs, laws and practical difficulties have resulted in denying women full control of land and property. This has been an obstacle for economic development and more importantly, the empowerment of women. Research was conducted in the areas of Batticaloa, Jaffna and the Vanni. The research involves looking into issues relating to practical difficulties faced by women in accessing & owning land, perceptions of women’s land & property rights and the impact of ethnicity, caste and religion on women’s access to land & property.
